Why Government? What is its Purpose?
The government is very important to a nation; the main job of the government is to provide stability to a nation. Stability is done by providing a good conduct of laws, and services, which are usually provided differently through many different types of governments around the world. It is very important that the government provides laws because they help to prevent conflict in the nation. Also through the laws the government is able to provide security and safety to people of the nation. Some ways the government provides this security is providing provided jobs in the armed services, judges and courts to protect people from criminals. Many types of governments provide public goods to the nation by placing roads, bridges, parks, police, and fire stations, these are usually provided through taxes, which are paid by citizens of a nation to the government.
Governments have to also resolve disagreements between nations to keep peace between each other to help and prevent conflict like war. Another important job is to keep an economy regulated this is again through taxes by taking money from the richer through taxes and providing some to the poor to help keep people in the nation in homes. Other ways governments tackle poverty is using methods called social security, In-Kind-Benefits, and free medical benefits.
Purpose of Government- 1. Need to Provide Stability 2. Security and Safety 3. Law and conduct 4. Services 5. Public goods 6. Help resolve disagreements with nations 7. Become allies with nations 8. Lure trade into country 9. Makes a country globalized through trade 10. Also makes a country globalized through immigrants it allows into the nation.
Are people naturally trustworthy or untrustworthy?
I find that people are neither naturally trustworthy nor unworthy. I find it is developed in which way they I ruled in the country. For example in a country with a type of government, which might be dictatorship, people will learn the ways of how the government is like. So maybe a country without globalization may be very closed minded not welcoming other nationalities. On the counter side with a country, which is very globalized and has a capitalist government will have people learning to everything freely and being open minded to many nations creating a melting pot.
Graded Discussions – Economics and Government
What is Economics? (Discuss definitions of types, discuss definition of social science)
Economics is a large topic, and doesn’t have a straightforward definition. It involves many criteria’s including, globalization, trade, taxes etc… this all put into a circular flow. Everyone around the world think differently on the subject economics. Depending on a nations economy people may agree and disagree, most likely nations with a strong economy show that most people would agree and support it. While nations that have poor economy will have little supporters.
Well
I found that during the discussion I had helped bring up some topics on the idea that economics does not have a straightforward answer, and people around the world think differently towards what economics is.
Improve
I would probably done better if had maybe explained clearer examples of how people think of economics differently around the world.
7/10
What are problems with economics as a field of study? (ceteris paribus, assumptions of the model, rational actors, maximizing benefits…)
To start with, economics as a field of studies is simply tough. This is because of how economics is constantly changing. This means that economists must freeze economic data and record it at that particular time he/she had froze it at.
Well
I had noticed that I had talked about how a big the economic field of study s and how it is constantly changing throughout the world.
Improve
I would have probably improved if had used some economic terms that we had learned in class through this question.
6/10
What are ways in which you can measure the development of a nation-state?
The economy in every nation is measured through many criteria’s. Some examples are through how much a nation trade with other nations that make it more globalized. Other examples include the GINI index, the GDP, KOF, etc… that are all indexes that show the development of a nation-state.
Well
I had tried to involve this to the government and how taxes may have to involve greatly and not only indexes.
Improve
I could have made my case of taxes being involved by showing more examples of how nations use taxes.
6/10
What makes an economy strong?
An economy is made strong through trade and agreements with nations or between firms. Agreements help countries to have better relations with nations, which may help them out in difficult situations. Trade is also a good part, this is because of globalization, It has shown that more trade the better the economy is. However within the nation there must be good governing for this to operate with out problems.
Well
I find that I had done well by brining up the topic of trade and how it is essential for an economy to work properly.
Improve
I could have improved by talking about good governing and how without it n economy cannot operate.
8/10
What are the different types of economies?
There are four different major types of economics, these are-
- Transitional economy- Is when a nation goes from a communist economy to a more planned economy usually capitalist
- Mixed economy – I when a nation has people supporting more then one economic system, his means that its half communist and half capitalist.
- Capitalist economy- It is also called a free economy, it involves properties being owned by individuals, goods and services are trade in a free market and goods and wealth’s are invested to create profit. It has shown to be the most successful and popular system today.
- Communist economy- Is a system that every citizen must trust the system and divide equally amongst people. People should not think about helping them selves but as a country as a whole in work. It has shown to fail causing poverty.
Well
Since I had answered and presented this question to the class I found that I had started the discussion by mentioning these four and the grouop and I had continued to explain each type.
Improve
Not much, but I have noticed to get to excited on topics I know about and tended to interrupt people as they are stating a point.

Why is economics and trade important? How are they related?
Trade is a huge part in economics, I find that trade may even form economic in someway. This is why economics and trade are both important and also how they are related. Trading I find brings the world together, this is because you become more aware with resources and items that come from all around the world. Businesses and companies create relationship with other international business to help and promote international trading.
Well
I had shown some good examples of how trade is very important for an economy to run, one example was the how Saudi is providing oil to the US if Saudi discontinues, the US’s economy would plummet.
Improve
Not much really, I thought I had done somewhat ok on the question, I could have possibly have mentioned some strong trade agreements around the world that have shown to be successful.
9/10
How can countries affect each other positively or negatively through economics or trade?
Well a country that is more in power, meaning having to do with how it economy is through relations and trade a country. However some relations between countries maybe broken causing much chaos, and even war. This can cause a nation not to be able to retrieve a resource from a nation or even banning citizens of a nation to entering that country completely.
Well
I have shown to come back to the same example in the pervious question, which is the oil trade between Saudi and the US. I had explained how if Saudi Arabia relations with the US have are broken it can result in stopping the trade of oil cause war.
Improve
I find that maybe I should have shown different examples that imply to the whole world and not just between Saudi and the US.
7/10
How is economics regulated? Provide examples of how governmentsregulate-economies, control economies, or how they encourage growth?
Economics is regulated usually from government plans for the economy of the country like implying taxes and to provide public goods to citizens. They would encourage growth through high paying jobs which can bring in foreign workers making more of a globalized nation.
Well
I find that I had mentioned one or two pints on this questions taking about how taxes usually work and help to provide public goods.
Improve
I could have probably talked to the sense of every economic system
6/10
How do governments and economies affect poverty whether in their own country or around the world?
Governments have shown to help poverty in countries by providing money to them through taxes, which are put on the wealthy. Some may also depend on donations. Because of all the different economic systems different rules apply for how the government can help tackle poverty. The communist is one example because every thing must be equal meaning that everyone gets the same out of money no matter how much they work.
Well
I had also answered a question similar to this, I had mention some example of how the American government deals with poverty in its nation.
Improve
I could have talked about more examples of how other governments deal with poverty around the world and not just in the US.

When did modern economics begin? What was necessary for this to occur?
Modern economics really did not begin till he industrial revolution that was around the 18th century where factories were being built trade had began increasing in England. Economics as a field of study had also developed during this period. I have found that modern economics had started after the great depression. I say this because we hadn't really understood what the economy really means till after the recovery of the economic crash.
Well
I had said that in my opinion that I had thought that modern economics didn’t start until after the great depression because no one really understood what was happening until it finally crashed. I found bringing up this discussion brings the point into a question mark.
Improve
Since I had done a project on the great depression I should have maybe tried to continue and convince them that it was really the great depression that had sparked modern economics.

Who gets the benefits of economic interaction and trade?
Through the cyclical flow we can see that everyone gets the benefit form interaction and trade. Trade is brought households buy what’s traded and taxes also are applied. Finally firms get money from government and get paid again to households.
Well
I didn’t understand the question to well so I didn’t say much, but as as some people in my group had began to mention the cyclical flow I found to understand the question much better
Improve
Should have looked more into the question before coming to the discussion.
Are people naturally inclined to trade and create an economy? What is required for this to occur?
Yes, people have always been naturally inclined to trade, since we can even remember in human history people had needs. That’s when they trade with someone something for a need that someone might have. So really what i saying is that ever since we had colonies and tribes they had been trading for needs like food. As this developed The Silk Road was created from europe to china bring much knowledge between them through technologies, also food like spices.
Well
I find I had did well mentioning how humans have always been trading since, everyone always have needs so to get those needs they needed to trade.
Improve
Could have shown some examples of ancient trading like the Silk Road.
7/10
How are economics and globalization related? In what other ways can you see the effects of globalization and economics in a society?
Globalization affects the economy greatly; we see three different types of globalization occurring, political, social, and economical. Political globalization is how much a country has relations with others like the WTO, G20, and the EU. Social globalization is when are in communities of a country and what people want. Economical globalization directly relates to how there economy relates to the world like trading.
